Orientation
I work with adolescents, adults, and couples to facilitate growth and change. My theoretical orientation can best be described as integrative, meaning that that I integrate psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and humanistic therapeutic approaches. My goal is to help you understand and identify problematic patterns relating to thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and to explore how these are affecting your life. I also will work with you to explore the meaning in your life and the values that are important to you. Through creating awareness of maladaptive patterns, and exploring how these intersect with your values, there is the ability to facilitate real change and growth. In an open, respectful, and supportive environment, a person’s ability to develop self awareness and to change self-defeating patterns is enhanced. My therapeutic style is compassionate and collaborative, in that we will work together in the process of change.
Background
I earned my doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tennessee in 2009, and completed my internship at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at the Seattle VA, in the Center of Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Education (CESATE). I have taught undergraduate courses in psychology and conducted research in the areas of adolescence, romantic relationships, and substance abuse.
I was trained as a generalist, treating adolescents, adults, and couples with a wide variety of problems. I have worked in community outpatient clinics, a college counseling center, VA medical centers, and in long-term residential facilities. I also have specialized training working with individuals with addictions, as well as co-occurring mental health problems.
