My psychotherapeutic orientation

My theoretical orientation is integrative, drawing from a variety of psychodynamic, emotion-focused, interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. I conceptualize the personality from a “depth” perspective. This means that I try to bring to light those aspects of your inner life that influence your choices, behaviors, self-esteem, emotions, and relationships. At the same time, I recognize that change takes place in the “here and now.” Together, we’ll examine the impact of current goals, social environment, coping resources, and life stressors on your well-being.

I consider the relationship between therapist and patient as a window into your usual relational patterns. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to examine problematic thinking and interpersonal behaviors as they are occurring and to experiment with new ways of thinking and interacting. How directive I am varies, as I aim to keep a balance between guiding/challenging you and supporting your own natural process of healing and self-discovery.

Psychological and neuropsychological assessment

Often, an individual is referred for an evaluation by another professional, such as a medical doctor, employer, primary therapist, social service agency, or college administrator. Reasons might include:

Background

I obtained a B.A. in 1985 at Williams College, in Williamstown, Mass. In 2005, I earned my doctoral degree in clinical psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York City. My training has included inpatient and outpatient settings, psychotherapy and assessment, and working with multicultural populations. I completed my psychology internship at the Portland VA Medical Center, in Oregon, where I received specialized training in neuropsychological assessment, PTSD treatment, and health psychology. For my postdoctoral residency, I worked in private practice, dividing my time between individual psychotherapy and assessment. I am licensed in Washington State (#3614) and joined Associates in Behavioral Health in 2007.

Insurance

Currently, I am a preferred provider with the following insurers. If I do not accept your insurance, your insurance provider may offer out-of-network benefits under your plan, which you can determine by contacting your plan’s administrator. I also offer a sliding-fee scale for clients who are in financial need and without insurance.
